Arabella Secure Linux
Arabella Secure Linux is designed for high speed applications based on Freescale’s encryption processors with IPsec and other security-related applications. With its highly optimized version of the open-source “Native IPsec” package, Arabella offers its customers performance on a par with high-end proprietary IPsec packages, but for a small portion of the cost.

“Native IPsec” is an open-source IPsec implementation that is available in Linux kernels from version 2.6 and on. It has also been backward propagated to earlier kernels (back to 2.4.21) and provides a complete and standard implementation of the popular IPsec protocol suite. Arabella has both modified the Native IPsec package itself (preserving external interfaces) and provided its own version of device drivers for the Freescale security processors (both on-chip and off-chip) in order to provide the leading version of Native IPsec for Freescale products.

Throughput Measurements
Arabella has benchmarked throughput of an IPsec application on a 400MHz 8272 processor (which has an on-chip encryption engine) at over 22,000 packets per second. This makes Arabella’s version of Native IPsec the highest performing version available today. By comparison, standard Native IPsec off-the-net runs the same applications on the same processor at close to 2,000 packets per second.

Arabella has conducted thorough throughput tests in order to calculate the impact on performance of:
  • Average packet length
  • Use of off-chip processors (MPC184/5) instead of on-chip (8248, 8272)
  • Blocking and non-blocking calling interfaces
  • Software implementation of encryption algorithms (by-passing the security processor)
  • Different modes of IPsec application (transport and tunnel modes)
  • Cost of ESP+AH as opposed to ESP alone
  • and more

More detailed information is available from Arabella under NDA.

Other Components of Arabella Secure Linux
Along with its optimized Native IPsec package, Arabella also offers the following packages for its Secure Linux:
  • optimized device drivers for nearly all PQ1/PQ2 peripherals, including Ethernet, Uart, ATM, USB (host and device), PCI, I2C, SPI
  • additional security-related applications: NAT, firewall and ssh
  • technical support directly from the engineers that designed and implemented te software

Support for Freescale Processors
Arabella Secure Linux is offered on the following Freescale security processors: MPC8272, MPC8248, MPC885 and on any PQ1/PQ2 processor coupled with the MPC184/MPC185 devices. A software-only version of Native IPsec is available from Arabella on any PQ1 or PQ2 processors.
